saying her name brings something out of me she's like a woman who took my lover away she selfishly stole and didn't care who she hurt she took the soul of the city the laugh the dance took the music and the melody the tapping of bottlecaps on concrete bright feathers and brass bands turned it into ugly damaged and dirty the levees broke her embryonic waters washed over us and birthed a new thing that saddens me pain and death are all that is left as her fury subsides i cry droplets of saline fall into the river that flows through the front door and out the back my tears seem insuficient and i watch helplessly as the memories float away in the muddy poisonous water
